The event reunites DJs from the city’s dance club heyday in six different designated areas. Scheduled DJs include: Birdmantastique, Bractune, Bruce Perdew, Clifton, Frankie, Jason Farber, Jason Lavitt, Jeffery, The Selecter DJ Kirk, Liz, Mike Stewart, Robert Lockerby, and Shalyce – who collectively provided the soundtrack to Los Angeles after dark for several unforgettable years.
Perdew and Stewart for example, have been behind some of L.A.’s darkest and most decadent gatherings under the banner of The Evil Club Empire. From Clockwork Orange to Helter Skelter, Perversion to Velvet, these two provided many nights of fiendish fanfare. Lavitt, who worked with the pair when he started out, went on to do several popular nights (with DJ legend Joseph Brooks) that helped define the diversity of the club scene at the time, both musically and stylistically. From the 80’s energy of Beat It! to the goth grinds of Coven 13 to groovy 60’s shindig Shout! (held at the El Rey Theater) to the dance pop indie hangout called Bang!, the DJ/promoter was and still is, driven by evolving tastes and crowds. “The best part about this party was showing how much crossover we had,” says Lavitt, of Massive, which was first held at the Variety Arts Center in Downtown. “We found mods in the goth room and goths in the mod room… It was just one huge party and meshing the formats together was even more fun.”
Piper Ferguson and Shalyce Benfell, who made names for themselves throwing the soulful mod night at Cafe Bleu (which ran from 1996-2000) also joined forces with Lavitt and Brooks on Bang! in the early 2000’s. Both nights “created a community of like-minded people, connected by a love for this type of music,” explains Benfell. “The weekly event we created became something bigger than just a club, it changed the pop cultural landscape of Los Angeles forever.”
Reuniting these top promoters after so many years, Massive will bring the magic back for a whole new crowd. “I remember the feeling of being on the dance floor for hours, waiting for the next song that amped up the adrenaline another notch, jumping up and down singing the words, being so in the moment,” Ferguson recalls. ”It's inspiring to watch this euphoric experience take place amongst club kids today.”
DJ Jeffrey, who currently co-promotes and deejays alongside Lavitt and Perdew at Club 90s and Y2K events in L.A. and across the country, sums up what makes this reunion of themed events so special; “It’s a chance to experience the roots of the club scene and explore different rooms and different genres,” he explains. “When I was 18, going to these massives that had 5+ rooms, it was mind opening and the most fun events I had ever been to. One second you could be shadow dancing to Siouxsie, the next bumping and grinding to Christina Aguilera, then ending the night stomping away to James Brown.”
Adding to the momentousness of Club Massive– the event will take place at one of L.A.’s truly historic nightlife venues, Catch One. The locale was the first African-American female-owned disco in Los Angeles (formerly known as Jewel’s) and it became a staple for inclusive entertainment hosting BIPOC LGBTQ+ bashes and banner events attended by the likes of Sharon Stone and Madonna at its height of popularity. A documentary about the club, produced by Ava Duvernay, was released in 2018. After Mitch and Steve Edelson (Los Globos, El Cid) bought it in 2016, the cavernous club has become a top event space, popular for its expansive layout and multiple environments, perfect for Club Massive’s varied themes.
